HyperX Cloud Flight S Wireless Gaming Headset, Surround Sound, Detachable Microphone, PC and PS4 Compatible

The Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset HyperX Cloud Flight S ($ 160) is another solid entry in HyperX’s ever-expanding lineup of audio peripherals. The model comes equipped with Qi wireless charging – a first for gaming headsets – as well as excellent wireless performance, good sound quality, and clever ear-cup control.

Cloud Flight S also provides some disappointment. Wireless charging isn’t nearly as seamless as it should be, the microphone leaves a lot to be desired, and therefore the headset is compatible with all of these systems. Nevertheless, the headset is mostly a pleasure to use and is well worth the high price that is accepted.

Design

Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset Cloud Flight S is somewhat similar to the original Cloud Flight, although not as much as the name might suggest. While the earlier models featured striped ear cups, red highlights, and loose wires in the headband, the Cloud Flight S is a much more low-key, elegant device. It is almost all black plastic with an associate adjustable, pointed headband and a white “HX” logo on the ear cups.

The left ear cup is where most of the special features reside, including a detachable, flexible mic, a power button, a 7.1 surround sound button, and a micro-USB charging port. But what is more interesting are the four circular signs that dot the left ear cup-like directions on the compass rose. You can program these buttons to do almost something, however by default, they control the game/chat balance, still as mic muting and sidetone. These are one of my favorite parts of Cloud Flight S, as they give you options due to not having many options.

On the cup of the right ear, there is a volume dial, and that is it. It is well-kept and is easy to see without.

Comfort

Thanks to its plush ear cups and padded headbands, I found the Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset Cloud Flight S to be extremely comfortable to wear at one time. Despite being rigid, not my preferred way of adjusting any headset, I quickly found a good fit and didn’t have to mess with sizing again until I gave the device to a co-worker.

After using it myself, my co-worker agreed with my assessment, stating that the headset was easy to wear and easy to adjust. She particularly likes the placement of volume controls.

Performance

I ran Cloud Flight S through a variety of games on PC and PS4, including Overwatch, Empire of Empire II: Definitive Edition, Shad of the Tomb Raider, and World of Victor. In every case, the soundscape was strong and nuanced, reaching from the passionate pleas of Lara Croft’s friends to the shots fired from Ash’s shotgun to the armor of a medieval blacksmith.

HyperX has also adapted surround sound for many games. Most games are developed with stereo sound, and 7.1 surround sound does not do them any favors. As such, HyperX has developed algorithms for better surround sound with games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Overwatch. I did not feel that these options provide a much better experience than traditional stereo sound, but at least it is a good choice.

Features

Like many other HyperX gear, Cloud Flight S runs on HyperX NGNEW software. The software is deeply fine-tuned, combining a bare-bones interface with many useful features. As mentioned on top, you’ll be able to reprogram the left earcup button with a range of multimedia functions (pause, play, fast-forward, rewind, and forward), alter the mic volume, and toggle the sidetone. And some surround sound options are subject to change.

However, one disappointing thing about the software is that it has no equalization options – even though the instruction sheet claims that Ngenuity lets you “customize the EQ profile”. This would have been a huge feather in the Cloud Flight S hat, especially since it is perfectly good for everyday music and media.

Then there is wireless charging, which works, though less easily than I would like. HyperX claims that the Cloud Flight S works with any Qi charger, however in practice, it absolutely was quite difficult to activate. Wireless chargers from Nimble, Google, and Mophie didn’t work at all – a charging pad from the Cooler Master finally worked, only after extensive scouring. Naturally, HyperX’s own Charge Play base ($ 60) works fine, but that’s the price of a new game. I contacted HyperX about these issues, but the company certainly did not know why some chargers would work, while others would not.

Wireless charging didn’t take very long; I got about 20% electricity in an hour, although the ear cup was much warmer later. This is a useful feature, as you can charge the headset whenever you are not in use without messing up the wires. But it is a poignant process. Once all this is charged, the battery can last up to 30 hours.

The mic is also not what I would expect from such an expensive headset. However, it did a great job of preventing background noise, Mike also overcame the dishes, and gave my voice an unpleasant buzz.

Performance

I played Fogging Molly, The Rolling Stones, Old Crow Medicine Show, and G.F. Heard the tracks from. Handle with Cloud Flight S, and I was quite pleased with the musical performance. There is not as much bass as there can be, which is particularly noticeable with the chorus and bluegrass pieces. But otherwise, the soundscape is intimate and intimate, with a smart balance between instrumentation and tone. I made the Cloud Flight S my regular workday headphones during my review, and I was in no hurry to return to my regular Logitech G533.

Our Rating | Excellent

The Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset HyperX Cloud Flight S is mostly a pleasure to use and is well worth the high price that is accepted.

Pros

  • Comfortable fit
  • Good sound for games and music
  • Convenient wireless features
  • Easy Ear Cup Button

Cons

  • Touchy wireless charging
  • Incompatible mike

Conclusion

The Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset Cloud Flight S is a great headset that could be even better. While wireless charging, mic, and software leave something to be desired, the design, comfort, and sound quality are exactly what you’d expect from a hyper gadget.

In the same price range, my absolute favorite headset is the SteelSeries Arctis 7 ($ 150), specifically, that headset also has a 3.5mm headphone jack. But if your primary systems are PC and PS4, then Cloud Flight S is a useful accessory, especially if you’ve got a reliable wireless charging base.
